The SASSA gold card deadline is 31 August 2026. After that date gold cards stop working at ATMs, tills and Postbank sites. Postbank says the deadline will not be extended.
Your grant is not cancelled. Postbank has confirmed that payments will still be made into the accounts of beneficiaries who miss the cut-off, and that those accounts stay active. What you lose is access to the money until you collect a Postbank Black Card. The swap is free and needs only a valid South African ID or a temporary ID.
Does this apply to you
| Your situation | Do you need to act? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You still hold a gold SASSA card | Yes | Collect a free Postbank Black Card before 31 August |
| You already hold a Postbank Black Card | No | Nothing. The card stays valid |
| Your grant is paid into an account at another bank | No | The deadline does not apply to your card |
Most beneficiaries are already done. Postbank said on 24 August that more than 1.8 million people have migrated since the process began in 2025, and that fewer than 80,000 still needed to complete the switch. On its own provincial breakdown at that date, KwaZulu-Natal had roughly 20,000 outstanding, the Western Cape about 17,000, the Eastern Cape about 15,000 and Gauteng about 14,000.
What the SASSA gold card deadline actually means
Two different statements have been issued about the consequences, and the difference matters.
In April, when the final replacement drive was announced, Postbank said anyone without a Black Card after the deadline would not be able to access their grant payments because gold cards would stop working. Read on its own, that line was widely repeated as meaning the grant itself would stop.
In the statement issued on 24 August, Postbank was more specific. Chief Commercial Officer Thami Cele said grant payments will still be made into the accounts of beneficiaries who miss the deadline, that those accounts remain active, and that beneficiaries will need to complete the migration before they can access the funds.
Both statements come from the same body, so the later and more specific one governs. The practical reading is that the money is deposited and waits in the account, but the gold card cannot draw it.
How to swap your card
- Dial 120355# from any mobile phone to find your nearest card replacement site. Do this before you travel, so you do not queue at a site that is not active.
- Take a valid South African identity document or a temporary ID. Nothing else is required.
- Collect the card at the Postbank service point inside the store. There are no forms to complete and no fee to pay.
- Start using it. Postbank says the Black Card works immediately on issue, and any balance sitting on the gold card transfers across automatically.
You do not need to visit a SASSA office first. Postbank has asked beneficiaries to bring card and payment queries to a Postbank service point rather than to SASSA, because SASSA offices do not issue the cards.
Where to go, and when they are open
Postbank Black Cards are collected from service points inside selected Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores.
The official statement gives site hours as Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00, nationwide. Postbank’s own website separately advertised Saturday openings at selected sites earlier in the migration, but the published Saturday site lists on that page run only to 4 July 2026 and have not been updated since. Confirm Saturday availability by phone before travelling on a weekend rather than assuming it.
Cards can be collected in any province, regardless of where the grant was originally approved.
For payment problems, PIN issues, lost or stolen cards, reissues or declined transactions, the Postbank call centre is 0800 5354 55.
What you need to bring
The only document required is a valid South African ID or an official temporary ID. If you still carry the older green identity book rather than a Smart ID, that is not a problem for this process: the green ID book has not been withdrawn and remains a valid identity document.
If your ID is lost or damaged, you will need to replace it before you can collect the card. You can apply for a Smart ID at selected bank branches as well as at Home Affairs offices.
September payment dates
The first payment cycle after the deadline is the one to plan around. These dates were approved by National Treasury in March 2026 and published by the Department of Social Development.
| Grant | September 2026 payment date | Day |
|---|---|---|
| Older Persons Grant | 2 September 2026 | Wednesday |
| Disability Grant | 3 September 2026 | Thursday |
| Children’s grants | 4 September 2026 | Friday |
If you have not swapped by then, the deposit still lands on your normal date. You will not be able to draw it until the migration is done.
Common problems
The site was closed or had no cards. Dial 120355# again rather than travelling to another store on a guess. The USSD line returns currently active sites by area.
You are elderly, ill or immobile. Postbank has run home visits for incapacitated beneficiaries in earlier phases of this migration. Phone 0800 5354 55 to ask what is available in the final week rather than sending someone else with your ID.
You swapped but the card is not working. Take it back to a Postbank service point. The bank has said the cards activate on issue, so a card that does not work at a till is a fault to be resolved at the site, not at SASSA.
You have been told to change banks. You do not have to. The migration is a card replacement within Postbank, not a change of payment method.
Scams around the switch
The migration has drawn fraud in every previous phase. Postbank has set out three tests.
The card must have the word Postbank printed on the front. If it does not, it is not a Postbank Black Card.
You are never asked to complete or sign a form to get one. If someone hands you paperwork to change your payment method, walk away.
Nobody from Postbank will ask for your PIN or a one-time password. There is no circumstance in which that request is legitimate.
The replacement is free at every step. Anyone charging for it is not acting for the bank.
Has this deadline moved before
Yes, repeatedly, which is why so many beneficiaries have not treated this one as final.
The migration began in September 2024. A deadline of 20 March 2025 was set, and SAnews reported on 19 March 2025 that gold cards would be deactivated the following day. Weeks later, Postbank confirmed that gold cards would in fact continue working beyond 31 May 2025, and the drive was suspended.
The current phase restarted on 29 April 2026 with 31 August 2026 as the cut-off. Postbank has stated on more than one occasion since April that this deadline will not be extended, and its own website now carries the notice that all SASSA gold cards will stop working on 31 August 2026. Treat it as firm, and confirm directly with Postbank before relying on any claim that it has moved again.
FAQ
Will I lose my SASSA grant if I miss 31 August?
No. Postbank says payments will still be deposited and the account stays active. You will not be able to withdraw until you complete the card swap.
Will the deadline be extended?
Postbank has said it will not be. Earlier deadlines in this migration were extended, so confirm with Postbank on 0800 5354 55 rather than relying on social media claims either way.
How much does the Postbank Black Card cost?
Nothing. The replacement is free, and no forms are required.
Do I have to go to a SASSA office?
No. Cards are issued at Postbank service points inside selected retailers. Postbank has specifically asked beneficiaries not to queue at SASSA offices for card matters.
My grant goes into my Capitec or Standard Bank account. Do I need to do anything?
No. This deadline applies only to people drawing their grant on a SASSA gold card.
Can I collect the card in a different province from where my grant was approved?
Yes. Postbank has confirmed cards may be collected at any active site nationwide.
What to watch
Postbank has said most card replacement sites will stay open for a period after 31 August to help people who miss the cut-off, but it has not published how long that period runs or which sites are included. That detail is the next thing to confirm, and this article will be updated when Postbank specifies it.
The other test is the 2 September payment date, the first cycle in which gold cards should be inactive. Watch for any SASSA or Postbank statement in the first week of September confirming whether the deactivation held or was softened again.
