The green barcoded ID book is on its way out, but as of August 2026 there is still no date on which it stops being valid. If you hold one, it remains a legal identity document and you can carry on using it.
What has changed is that Home Affairs no longer issues new green ID books. Every new or replacement application now produces a Smart ID card. Around 16 million South Africans still carry the green book.
Here is where things actually stand.
Is the green ID book still valid?
Yes. No deadline has been announced and no date has been gazetted.
You do not need to rush. You do need to know the switch is coming, and that getting a Smart ID is far easier now than it was two years ago.
What government has actually said
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has been consistent: the green book will be invalidated, but only once South Africans can realistically get a Smart ID. His argument is that the obstacle was never the department’s ability to print cards, it was the queues people had to stand in.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said in June 2026 that Home Affairs would set a deadline after which green ID books would no longer be accepted. No such date has been announced since.
Home Affairs Deputy Director-General Thulani Mavuso has indicated the department could stop printing green ID books before the end of 2026 and retire the machine that produces them.
Those are two different things and a lot of coverage confuses them. Printing is ending. Validity is not, yet.
Why the green book is being scrapped
The case rests on fraud. The green ID book carries no biometric data, it is straightforward to forge, and it has become the main route into identity theft in South Africa. Schreiber has linked it directly to illegal migration and smuggling.
Identity verification firms reported a sharp rise in impersonation fraud involving green ID books through 2025 and 2026, driven partly by AI tools that have made forgery easier and cheaper.
The Smart ID card carries an embedded chip and biometric data, which makes the same attacks far harder to pull off.

- End 2026 Home Affairs target of 750 participating bank branches

How to switch to a Smart ID
You can now do it at a bank instead of a Home Affairs office. At selected Capitec and Standard Bank branches you can walk in without booking. Other banks require you to book through eHomeAffairs first.
Bring your green ID book and proof of address. Originals, not copies. Processing takes 10 to 14 working days and you collect at the same branch.
The upgrade costs R140. Only a genuine first ID, where you have never held a green book or a Smart ID, is free.

What happens if you do not switch?
Nothing, for now. Your green book stays valid until government says otherwise.
Two things worth weighing. When a deadline is finally announced there will be a rush, and the queues everyone has spent two years escaping will come straight back. And banks and credit providers are already treating green book holders as higher fraud risk in some verification processes.
Switching now costs you an hour at a bank branch. Switching in the last month before a deadline will cost considerably more.
What to do with your green book afterwards
Destroy it once your Smart ID is in hand. Cut through the barcode and the biographical page.
Do not keep it as a backup. Home Affairs has flagged that people who hold on to green books still transact with them, which is exactly the vulnerability the switch is meant to close.
