SASSA Life Certification: What to Do If You Were Paid on 7 September

Beneficiaries paid on the fourth payment day of 7 September 2026 have been flagged for a grant review or e-Life Certification and must complete it to avoid suspension.

Why your grant arrived on 7 September

SASSA life certification is a legal requirement, and if your grant was paid on Monday 7 September 2026 instead of your usual date, you have most likely been flagged for it or for a grant review. That fourth payment day is reserved for beneficiaries whose files have been selected for verification.

Being paid on that day is not a cancellation. It is a warning shot. You were still paid, but SASSA now expects you to complete the process, and it can suspend the grant in a later cycle if you do not.

What life certification actually is

Life certification is a statutory requirement under the Social Assistance Act. It confirms that a grant recipient is still alive and still meets the eligibility rules for the grant they receive.

SASSA uses it to stop payments going to people who have died and to catch fraudulent claims. The agency has been blunt about the consequence of silence. If you do not certify when instructed, SASSA may treat the absence of a response as an indication that the beneficiary is deceased or not legitimate.

A grant review is a related but separate check. A review looks at whether your circumstances still meet the qualifying rules, which can mean producing documents about income or household details rather than simply proving you are alive.

Who has to do it, and how often

There are two situations, and the difference matters.

Situation What is required
General beneficiaries able to self-serve Certify once a year
Beneficiaries specifically identified by SASSA Certify within the timeframe SASSA gives

Where SASSA has identified you directly, the annual rhythm falls away. The agency has stated that identified beneficiaries must comply within the stipulated timeframe irrespective of grant type or date of birth. Age does not exempt you and neither does the type of grant you receive.

How to do it online

SASSA runs a self-service platform called e-Life Certification. It sits on the SASSA Online Services Portal at services.sassa.gov.za and uses electronic Know Your Client biometric verification, integrated with Home Affairs records, to confirm your identity.

You will need a phone or computer with a working front camera and a data connection. Log in or register on the portal, then follow the prompts to complete the certification. Check that your personal details are correct while you are in there, because SASSA uses those details to verify eligibility.

SASSA reported system glitches on this portal in April 2026, caused by the interfaces with other departments, and confirmed the problem was resolved. If the portal fails on you, try again later before assuming you have been rejected.

If you cannot use the portal

Not every beneficiary has a smartphone or data, and SASSA has said so itself. If the online route is not available to you, go to your nearest SASSA office with your identity document.

If you were paid on the fourth payment day, the guidance has been to visit a SASSA office during the same month to complete the process rather than waiting for the next payment cycle. Go early in the month if you can. Offices are busiest in the first week after payment dates.

What happens if you do nothing

The sequence is predictable. First a payment delay or a shift to the fourth payment day. Then suspension of the grant. If the suspension is never resolved, the grant lapses and you have to apply again from scratch.

The most common reason people miss the process entirely is an out of date cellphone number. SASSA notifies beneficiaries by SMS. If the number on your file belongs to a phone you lost two years ago, you will not see the notification and the first sign of trouble will be money that does not arrive. Update your contact details with SASSA whether or not you have been flagged.

If your grant has already been suspended, that is a different process from an SRD refusal, though the principle of responding quickly is the same. Our guide to the SRD grant appeal process explains how appeals work on that side.

Watch for scams

Nobody should be charging you to complete life certification. It is a free government process, done either on the official portal or at a SASSA office.

Use services.sassa.gov.za and nothing else. Links arriving by WhatsApp forward or SMS from an unknown number should be ignored, and no SASSA official will ask for your portal password or a payment to speed things up. If you are still using an old gold card, deal with that separately through the Postbank black card swap, and check the September 2026 payment dates before you conclude a payment is late.

Where to check

SASSA publishes grant and service information at www.sassa.gov.za, and the e-Life Certification platform is at services.sassa.gov.za. The SASSA call centre is 0800 60 10 11 and grant queries go to [email protected]. The SASSA WhatsApp line is 082 046 8553. If you are unsure whether you have been selected, phone the call centre or ask at your local office rather than acting on a message from a third party.

This article was produced with AI assistance and checked against SASSA and South African Government statements.
