KwaMakhutha shooting: all 14 at the house were shot

Police say a preliminary check placed some of those killed on a Crime Intelligence list, a claim that is unspecified and untested.

What is confirmed about the KwaMakhutha shooting

Eleven people were killed and three wounded in the KwaMakhutha shooting on Tuesday night, 22 September 2026, at a house in the Ziko area of the township, roughly 30 kilometres south of Durban.

Fourteen people were inside. Police say they were 13 men and one woman believed to be pregnant, gathered at a party, when three men arrived shortly before 23:00 and opened fire.

Ten died at the scene, including the woman. Four were taken to hospital, where one died. That leaves 11 dead and three survivors.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said a manhunt is under way. No arrests have been made and no suspect has been named. KwaMakhutha police and the eThekwini District Tracing Team were at the scene.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, who was due to visit the township on Wednesday, said the attack “has left the community in profound shock and grief”. His spokesperson, Lindelani Mbatha, said the premier would meet law enforcement, community representatives and affected families.

Everyone in the house was shot

The police numbers carry a detail that has not been stated plainly anywhere.

Number
People in the house 14, being 13 men and one woman believed to be pregnant
Gunmen, per police 3
Died at the scene 10, including the woman
Taken to hospital 4
Died in hospital 1
Total dead 11
Surviving wounded 3
Arrests None

Fourteen people were present. Eleven were killed and three were wounded. Nobody in that house was left unharmed.

That is consistent with an account carried by broadcaster eNCA, which reported that the attackers herded everyone into a single room before opening fire, and that a vehicle belonging to one of those present was set alight. Neither detail appears in the police statement, and Southafriworld could not confirm them independently.

There is one unresolved count. The premier was reported as saying two people survived. The police account leaves three. The difference has not been explained.

What the police statement does and does not establish

Within hours of the attack, one line from the police statement had become the organising fact of much of the coverage.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that “some of the victims were on Crime Intelligence radar in connection with illegal activities”, adding that they could not divulge what those activities were in order to protect the investigation. Netshiunda said that while the motive is unconfirmed, “a feud between rival groupings cannot be ruled out”.

It is worth being precise about what that establishes, because it is less than it sounds.

The statement is described by police as preliminary. It does not say how many of the 11 were on any list, or which of them. It does not specify the activities. It does not say any of the dead was ever charged with, or convicted of, anything. Being of interest to Crime Intelligence is not a finding of guilt, and none of the people it refers to can answer it.

It also sits alongside a fact in the same statement. One of those killed was a woman police believe was pregnant, at a house party.

None of this suggests the police are wrong. Investigators may well be right, and they have said openly that the motive is not confirmed. The point is narrower: an unspecified, untested, preliminary characterisation of dead people is now doing a great deal of work in how this attack is being described, days before anything has been established.

How the same police service framed a comparable attack

There is a direct comparison on the record.

In January 2023, two gunmen opened fire at a birthday party at a house in Kwazakele, Gqeberha, killing eight people and wounding three. No arrests had been made when the police statement was issued.

Eastern Cape provincial commissioner Nomthetheleli Lillian Mene said at the time: “These victims were killed by criminals.” She described the attack as callous and cold-blooded and the dead as unsuspecting.

Two mass shootings at house parties, both with no arrests at the time of the statement, characterised in materially different terms. Southafriworld draws no inference about why. It is recorded here because the first official description of a victim tends to be the one that sticks.

What happens next

No arrests have been made and no motive has been confirmed. The investigation sits with KwaZulu-Natal detectives and the eThekwini District Tracing Team.

Anyone with information can contact their nearest police station, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app.

The context is difficult. South Africa records roughly 60 murders a day in a population of about 62 million. Eleven killed in one room in one night is close to a fifth of the national daily average, and the calculation is Southafriworld’s.

Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia announced weeks ago that murders fell 5.9% in the first quarter of 2026 against the same period last year. Both things can be true at once, and a declining national rate is no comfort in KwaMakhutha this week. The same tension followed the Johannesburg shooting in which 12 people were killed earlier this year.

Soldiers were deployed alongside police to violent hotspots in March, an escalation covered in the SANDF deployment against organised crime. Township residents have long argued that police response times and investigative resources do not match those in wealthier areas, a pattern that has been reshaping how South Africans live for years.

No victim has been publicly named. Three people are in hospital. Three gunmen are unaccounted for, and on the record so far, that is all that is established.

Published
  • This article was built from the South African Police Service statement on the KwaMakhutha shooting issued on 23 September 2026 and from the SAPS KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson's account of the incident, together with the statement issued through the Office of the KwaZulu-Natal Premier, all read in full.
  • The casualty arithmetic was checked against the police account itself, which places 14 people in the house, 10 dead at the scene, four taken to hospital and one further death there, and that arithmetic leaves three survivors rather than the two reported elsewhere, a discrepancy flagged in the article.
  • The police characterisation of some victims as having been on a Crime Intelligence list was reported in full and then examined for what it establishes, because it is an unspecified preliminary claim about people who are dead and cannot answer it, and it is already leading coverage of the attack.
  • A comparable official statement following a mass shooting at a house party in the Eastern Cape in January 2023 was located and included as a factual comparison of how two police statements characterised victims, without any inference drawn about the reason for the difference.
  • No victim is named because none has been publicly identified, no suspect is named because none has been arrested, descriptions of injuries were deliberately excluded, and no comment was sought from any party because every statement used is already on the public record.
  • This article was drafted with AI assistance and the facts, figures and quotations were checked against the primary source by the editor before publication.
Corrections and updates: No arrests have been made and the motive has not been established, and this article will be updated when any arrest is made, when the police confirm a motive, or when the victims are formally identified.
