The school holidays 2027 dates for South African public schools are set. The autumn break runs from 20 March to 5 April, the winter break from 26 June to 19 July, and the spring break from 23 September to 4 October. The summer break starts on 9 December. Learners attend school from Wednesday, 13 January to Wednesday, 8 December 2027, a total of 197 school days. That comes to 42 weeks and 197 actual school days for learners across the year. Term 2 is the longest term and Term 1 is the only term that opens mid-week rather than on a Monday.
Public holidays in 2027 and where they fall
Only four days off inside the school year come from public holidays or a special school holiday. The rest of the 2027 public holidays fall in the breaks or on weekends.

Human Rights Day on 21 March 2027 and the Day of Goodwill on 26 December 2027 both fall on a Sunday, so the following Mondays are public holidays instead.
The most useful planning date for parents is Monday, 26 April. The department declared it a special school holiday so that it joins Freedom Day on Tuesday, 27 April to create a four-day weekend. It is a school closure, not a national public holiday, so most workplaces will still be open.
One national calendar, no inland and coastal split
South Africa used to run two school calendars, one for the inland provinces and one for the coastal provinces. That split no longer applies. Since 2024 all nine provinces follow a single set of term dates, so a family in Cape Town and a family in Polokwane now break on the same day.
Educator dates are not the same as learner dates
Teachers report earlier and finish later than learners. In 2027 educators start on 11 January, two days ahead of learners, and close on 10 December, two days after them. That gives educators 201 working days against the learners’ 197. If you are looking at a calendar that says the year runs 11 January to 10 December, you are reading the educator dates.
Staffing pressure is worth watching alongside the calendar, given continuing reports of unfilled teaching posts in South Africa in several provinces.
Independent and private schools set their own dates
The gazetted calendar binds public schools. Independent schools, including most private and church schools, are free to set their own terms and often start earlier in January and finish earlier in December. Some run a four-term year that does not line up with the public calendar at all. Check the school’s own diary before booking flights.
Fee planning matters here too, with tax changes that could push private school fees higher still working their way through the system.
Where published dates disagree
Not every official page carries the same numbers. The government’s general school calendar page currently lists Term 3 of 2027 as running from 20 July to 1 October over 11 weeks and 54 days. The gazetted calendar lists Term 3 as 20 July to 22 September over 10 weeks and 47 days, and the internal totals only add up using the gazette figures.

Dates can still change
A gazetted calendar is not immune to amendment. Ministers have amended school calendars before, most notably during the pandemic. Provinces and individual schools can also close for shorter periods without the national calendar changing, which is what happens with school closures during severe weather, municipal service failures or local safety incidents.
Grade 12 learners should also plan around the final examination period, which runs inside Term 4 and does not follow the ordinary school day for candidates who have finished writing.
Common mistakes
Booking a flight on the last day of term. Schools are open until the closing date. The break starts the day after.
Using educator dates by accident. Many printable calendars show 11 January and 10 December without labelling them.
Assuming your province is different. It is not. The inland and coastal split ended in 2024.
Treating 26 April as a public holiday. It is a special school holiday only.
Assuming an independent school follows these dates. Many do not.
