South Africa lost 2-0 to co-hosts Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Thursday, 11 June 2026. The result marked Bafana Bafana’s return to the World Cup stage after a 16-year absence.
Julián Quiñones gave Mexico the lead inside nine minutes. The goal followed a costly error, with Sphephelo Sithole losing possession near his own penalty area before Quiñones intercepted and fired home the first goal of the tournament.
Raúl Jiménez headed home Mexico’s second, his first-ever World Cup goal. The Fox Sports box score recorded the goal in the 67th minute, assisted by Roberto Alvarado.
The match descended into one of the most ill-disciplined World Cup openers on record. Three straight red cards were shown, ending the game at ten men against nine and marking the first match in 20 years with three red cards.
Why it matters
This was South Africa’s first World Cup appearance since 2010, when the country hosted the tournament. The fixture came exactly 16 years after the two nations met in the opening match of the 2010 World Cup, which ended in a 1-1 draw in Johannesburg.
This time there was no Siphiwe Tshabalala moment. A defeat with two players sent off leaves Hugo Broos’s side facing an immediate uphill battle in Group A, where suspensions will now thin an already stretched squad.
Sithole’s red card carries a two-match ban, meaning he will miss the rest of the group stage. The disciplinary fallout compounds the defeat: South Africa must now chase points in their remaining two group fixtures with key midfield options unavailable.
Group A consists of Mexico, South Africa, South Korea and Czechia, with the top two teams, possibly along with the third-placed team, advancing to the round of 32 in the expanded 48-team format. Qualification therefore remains mathematically open despite the loss.
Key details and figures
Final score: Mexico 2, South Africa 0. Mexico led 1-0 at half-time.
Goals: Quiñones in the ninth minute and Jiménez in the 67th minute, assisted by Alvarado. For 35-year-old Jiménez, the goal was an emotional milestone after a serious head injury in 2020 threatened his career.
Red cards: Sphephelo Sithole was sent off early in the second half, Themba Zwane followed late on, and Mexico’s César Montes was dismissed in added time as Mexico finished with ten men. The Fox Sports match record logged Zwane’s red card in the 84th minute for unsporting behaviour and Montes’s in the second minute of added time for serious foul play.
Sithole’s dismissal came after he fouled Brian Gutiérrez just outside the South Africa penalty box, with Gutiérrez in on goal and Sithole the last man back. Montes was shown red for denying a goalscoring opportunity after clipping Khuliso Mudau just outside the box as South Africa broke in numbers.
The last World Cup match with three straight red cards also involved South Africa, against Denmark in 1998, when Bafana Bafana received one to the Danes’ two.
Attendance and venue: More than 80,000 mostly Mexican fans packed the Estadio Azteca. The stadium became the first to host matches at three different men’s World Cups, having previously staged games in 1970 and 1986.
South Africa’s goalkeeper provided one of the few bright spots. Ronwen Williams produced an excellent diving save to deny a Jiménez header in the opening minutes.
What happens next
South Africa play Czechia in Atlanta, Georgia on Thursday, 18 June, while Mexico face South Korea in Guadalajara on the same day. The Czechia fixture is now effectively a must-not-lose match for Bafana Bafana’s hopes of progressing.
Sithole is suspended for the remainder of the group stage. Zwane’s red card will also trigger a suspension, with FIFA’s disciplinary committee to confirm its length. SAFA and the technical team had not issued a detailed post-match statement at the time of publication.
The third-place pathway in the 48-team format means a single win and a draw could still be enough to advance. South Africa’s final group match, against South Korea, follows the Czechia fixture and will likely decide their tournament fate.
