Official data puts battery EVs at one in 150 new cars

naamsa recorded 16,289 new energy vehicles through July, but only 2,360 were battery-electric, and three electric-only brands do not report their sales at all.

South Africa EV sales: one in 150 new cars | Southafriworld

What is arriving, and what the sales data says

South Africa EV sales are growing quickly from a very small base, and the figures being quoted in most coverage describe a category that is mostly not electric.

New models are genuinely arriving. Changan, Chery, Geely, Dongfeng, GWM, JAECOO and Lepas are all bringing electrified vehicles into the country. Arthur Goldstuck, chief executive officer and founder of World Wide Worx, pointed to the Lepas L6 with a claimed range of up to 450km, Geely’s Riddara RD6 electric bakkie, and Suzuki’s e Vitara at 395km, saying “EVs are definitely coming in as alternatives to your regular petrol vehicle”.

Around 23 vehicles were announced at the 2026 Festival of Motoring, most from Chinese manufacturers.

The measured side comes from naamsa, the Automotive Business Council, which released its August figures on 2 September. Total new vehicle sales reached 57,898 units in August, up 11.4% year on year, with passenger cars at 41,216 and light commercial vehicles at 13,727. Exports fell 11.9% to 35,091 units.

What South Africa EV sales data actually shows

New energy vehicle sales through July reached 16,289 units, an 88% increase on the same period in 2025 and equal to 4.4% of all domestic new vehicle sales. That total has already passed the 15,596 units sold in the whole of 2024 and equals 97.5% of the 2025 full-year total.

The composition is where the headline figure and the reality separate.

CategoryUnits, January to July 2026Share of NEV sales
Conventional hybrids8,07849.6%
Plug-in hybrids5,85135.9%
Battery-electric2,36014.5%
All new energy vehicles16,2894.4% of all new vehicle sales

The percentage shares are a Southafriworld calculation from naamsa’s published unit figures.

Conventional hybrids never plug in. They are petrol vehicles with a battery that recharges through the engine and braking. Nearly half of what is counted as new energy vehicle sales falls into that category.

Working the other direction gives the figure that has not been published. If 16,289 units equal 4.4% of the market, the total through July is roughly 370,000 vehicles. Against that, 2,360 battery-electric vehicles is about 0.6%, or roughly one in every 157 new vehicles sold.

naamsa describes this plainly, saying “the domestic market is following a technology-diverse pathway” rather than a rapid transition to battery-electric vehicles, and citing affordability, consumer driving patterns, charging infrastructure availability and technology choice.

The direction of travel is still upward. Battery-electric sales of 2,360 in the first seven months compare with 641 in the same period of 2025, a 268% increase, and their share of NEV sales rose from 11% to 14%. Plug-in hybrids grew 432% to 5,851 units. In July specifically, plug-in vehicles accounted for 54.4% of NEV sales, overtaking conventional hybrids for the first time.

Three electric-only brands are missing from the count

The official numbers understate the market, and by an amount nobody can currently quantify.

BYD only began submitting its sales figures to naamsa in March 2026, and has averaged roughly 740 units a month since. Geely, Dongfeng and iCaur, three brands that sell only new energy vehicles, have not reported their sales at all.

Two of those brands are named among the manufacturers expanding South Africa’s electric offering. The official data cannot measure the expansion that the coverage describes, because the companies driving part of it are outside the reporting system.

That is the central unresolved question in this story. The true battery-electric total is higher than 2,360, the true growth rate is higher than 268%, and no published figure establishes by how much.

The price band the new models are landing in

The new arrivals are clustering in one part of the market. The Chery Q hatchback arrives in September 2026 at R360 000, and Goldstuck placed the new entrants broadly in a R360 000 to R450 000 band.

That is the affordability constraint naamsa names. It is also why fuel costs matter to the calculation, and why interest in electrified vehicles has tracked pump prices through 2026, a cost pressure Southafriworld has followed through rising fuel and levy costs.

For a buyer, the running cost saving has to be weighed against a purchase price at the upper end of the mass market, a charging network concentrated in metros and along main routes, and resale values in a segment with very little trading history in South Africa.

A new naamsa chief takes over a stalled policy fight

Dr Mncane Mthunzi took office as chief executive of naamsa on Monday, 7 September 2026, ending an interim arrangement that had run since April, when Mikel Mabasa stepped down after more than six years. Chief operations officer Shinny Gobiyeza, who served as interim chief executive, returns to her substantive role.

naamsa president Peter van Binsbergen described the moment as one that will shape the sector’s structure and competitiveness for years. The board set eight strategic priorities for the new chief executive, covering competitiveness, investment retention, localisation, the new energy vehicle transition, export market development, skills, transformation, and coordination between industry, government and organised labour.

The pressure is not coming from the domestic market. naamsa represents 44 companies and puts the automotive industry at 5.2% of GDP and 23.8% of national manufacturing output, with R291 billion in exports across 154 markets in 2025 and 113,000 people directly employed in manufacturing. Vehicle exports to the United States fell 74% in 2025, from 25,544 units to 6,530, with a further 36% decline in the first half of 2026.

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition has been reviewing the Automotive Production and Development Programme and the 2035 masterplan, with completion flagged for September 2026. Draft changes would widen the definition of standard materials to include battery minerals from the SADC region, and African Continental Free Trade Area automotive rules of origin adopted in February 2026 require 40% regional content for duty-free African trade.

None of those documents has been published in final form. Related motoring policy decisions remain outstanding as well, including proposed changes to driving licence validity that the Department of Transport is still considering. naamsa’s next monthly sales release, covering September, is due in the first days of October.
