The window closed at midnight
Gauteng online admissions 2027 closed at 00:00 on Friday 4 September 2026. The system opened at 08:00 on Wednesday 5 August, ran for a month, and shut on schedule. The Gauteng Department of Education has been unambiguous that no new applications are accepted once the period has closed.
If you applied, the work now is checking your application rather than submitting anything further. If you did not, the route is no longer the online system.
What you were applying for
Only two grades go through the online system. Grade 1 and Grade 8 placements at Gauteng public schools for the 2027 academic year.
Two things catch parents out every cycle.
- Grade R learners are not automatically promoted to Grade 1. A child already at a public school in Grade R still has to apply.
- Grades 2 to 7 and Grades 9 to 12 do not use the online system at all. Those applications go directly to the school.
Parents also had to register with new login credentials this cycle, because usernames and passwords from previous years no longer worked.

That last number is the one to hold in mind. Gauteng runs the largest public school system in the country and it is still growing, which is why placement takes time and why popular schools are oversubscribed long before the department starts allocating.
Education MEC Lebogang Maile has framed the exercise as a planning tool as much as an admissions one. Every application feeds the department’s forecasting for teacher provisioning, classroom allocation, learner transport, school nutrition, learner support material, furniture and infrastructure. Applying is not the same as being placed
Submitting an application starts a process. It does not reserve a seat.
Placement is done by the department after the window closes, and the number of schools you selected, the accuracy of the address details you supplied and the authenticity of your supporting documents all affect what happens next. Applications with missing or invalid documents are the most common reason a parent ends up waiting.
The department communicates placement outcomes through the online admissions system and by SMS to the number on the application, which is why a wrong cellphone number is worth fixing now rather than in November. Check the admissions site for the published placement and acceptance dates for this cycle, because the acceptance window is short and a missed offer can go to the next applicant.
Nobody can sell you a school place
The MEC put this plainly when the window opened: no public school place in Gauteng is for sale, the department charges no fee for assisting parents with online admissions, and every official support service is free.
Take that as a working rule. Anyone offering to secure a placement, expedite an application or move a child up a list in exchange for money is running a scam. So is anyone offering to supply supporting documents. Submitting fraudulent documents is grounds for the application to fail, and the parent carries that risk, not the agent who charged for it.
If you did not apply
The department’s position is that the online system will not reopen for new applications. That does not mean a child goes without schooling, because the province still has to place every learner of compulsory school-going age.
The practical route is the district office and the department’s own help channels rather than the portal.

Expect fewer options. Late applicants are placed where there is space, which is rarely the school at the top of a parent’s list.
The system’s own record
It is worth being realistic about the platform. The online admissions system has had technical problems, placement delays, limited school options for some applicants and accessibility difficulties for parents without data or devices in previous cycles. Opposition parties criticised the timing of this year’s window on the same grounds before it opened.
Keep evidence. Screenshots of your submitted application, the reference number, and dated proof of any document you uploaded are what turn a dispute into a solvable one.

Use the call centre or WhatsApp line for status queries rather than third-party pages, and treat any request for payment as a scam.
