GDE admissions 2027: the 11 September document deadline and what happens next

Applications closed on 4 September, but outstanding certified documents are due by noon on 11 September or the application is incomplete.

The deadline is 12:00 on Friday 11 September

Parents with outstanding documents in the GDE admissions 2027 process have until 12:00 on Friday 11 September 2026 to submit or upload them. Applications without certified proof of home address by then will be treated as incomplete and will not receive a placement offer.

The online application window itself closed at midnight on Friday 4 September 2026. This second deadline is separate. It applies only to applications already submitted where supporting documents are still missing.

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile set out the position at a briefing on Sunday 6 September. He said proof of home address matters most because it is what the department uses to determine placement. Applications supported by fraudulent or invalid documents will also be treated as incomplete.

What you need to do before Friday

  • Log in to the Online Admissions System and check the status of every application you submitted.
  • Upload certified copies of anything still outstanding, or hand them in at one of the schools you selected.
  • Proof of home address is the critical one. If the address on your application does not match the document, fix it now, not after placement offers go out.
  • Check that the cellphone number on the application is correct and working, because placement offers are sent by SMS to that number.

Certified copies are the standard requirement, which means a commissioner of oaths has stamped them. If a birth certificate is the missing item, note that Home Affairs turnaround is not measured in days, so use whatever certified copy you already hold. Our guide to the unabridged birth certificate explains which version schools generally accept, and Home Affairs service channels covers where to go if you have nothing at all.

The numbers behind the queue

Measure 2027 cycle
Applications submitted 805 688
Parents and guardians registered 357 468
Individual learners seeking placement 346 877
Grade 1 learners 169 396
Grade 8 learners 177 481

The 805 688 figure is not 805 688 children. Parents may apply to more than one school for the same learner, so the application count runs well ahead of the learner count. Maile made that point directly. The number that matters for capacity planning is 346 877 individual learners.

Demand is concentrated in a handful of schools

Maile said the pattern in the data is concentration rather than a uniform shortage. Some schools are swamped while others a few kilometres away have empty classrooms and falling enrolment.

Pretoria schools recorded the heaviest demand. Hoërskool Langenhoven in Tshwane West received the highest number of Grade 8 applications at 3 462, followed by Alberton High School with 2 756 and Katlehong Secondary School with 2 747.

That is the practical reason to have listed more than one school and to have used a school near your home. Feeder zone proximity is part of how the system allocates places, which is why the address document is the one the department keeps flagging.

What happens next

Stage Timing
Online applications closed Midnight, 4 September 2026
Outstanding documents due 12:00, 11 September 2026
Document verification by schools, then district quality assurance September to October 2026
First placement offers by SMS From 15 October 2026
Time to accept or decline an offer 7 days from the offer

Maile said placement offers will not be issued immediately after the application period closes. Schools have to verify documents for authenticity first, and applications then go to district offices for quality assurance so that outcomes match the school options and the documents submitted.

The department’s admissions calendar sets separate windows for alternative placement, objections, appeals and late applications. Those dates were not given at the briefing, so check the Online Admissions System for them rather than assuming last year’s schedule applies.

If you missed the application window

Late applications are handled after the main placement round and depend on schools that still have space. That is a materially worse position than applying on time, because the popular schools will already be full. Apply through the late application process as soon as it opens rather than waiting to see whether anything changes.

Nobody outside the official process can secure a place. Anyone offering to guarantee a school placement for payment is running a scam, and the department has flagged fraudulent proof of address as an admissions offence in its own right.

Where to check

The Gauteng Department of Education runs the process through its Online Admissions System, and status updates for your specific application appear there. The department’s toll free number is 0800 000 789. Walk-in centres operate across Tshwane, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng for parents who need in-person help, and the department publishes the current list on its admissions site. If you are already planning around the 2027 school year, the 2027 school calendar sets out the term dates.
