SASSA black card deadline is today, grants land Wednesday

Roughly 70 000 beneficiaries have not collected the new card, and the older persons grant is paid in 48 hours.

SASSA Black Card Deadline Is Today | Southafriworld

The SASSA black card deadline ends today, and around 70 000 grant beneficiaries have still not collected the card they need to draw their money.

SASSA says the old gold cards are no longer operational. The September grant run starts on Wednesday.

That leaves a narrow gap for anyone still holding a gold card. An older persons grant beneficiary who has not collected will have R2 400 deposited on 2 September that cannot be withdrawn until the black card is in hand.

The money itself is not at risk. Postbank has said any balance on a gold card carries across to the black card automatically, and that collection sites will stay open after today.

Postbank has also said the deadline will not be extended.

What happens to your September grant if you have not collected

Nothing is deducted, cancelled or returned. The grant is paid into the account as normal on the scheduled date and stays there.

The problem is access. Without the black card there is no working means of drawing the money at an ATM or a till point.

The three main payment days fall inside the same week as the deadline. Southafriworld has published the full September SASSA payment dates separately.

Older PersonsWednesday 2 SeptemberR2 400
DisabilityThursday 3 SeptemberR2 400
Children’s grants, including Child SupportFriday 4 SeptemberR580 for Child Support
Beneficiaries flagged for review or eLife certificationMonday 7 SeptemberAs per grant type

The Care Dependency and War Veterans grants pay R2 400 and R2 420 respectively, and the Foster Child Grant R1 290, according to the Department of Social Development’s approved 2026/27 schedule. Those figures have applied since the April increases and are unchanged for September. The current SASSA grant amounts have not moved this month.

Where the outstanding beneficiaries are

Postbank published a provincial split of the remaining migrations a week before the deadline, when it put the outstanding number at fewer than 80 000.

  • KwaZulu-Natal: about 20 000
  • Western Cape: about 17 000
  • Eastern Cape: about 15 000
  • Gauteng: about 14 000

The current migration phase began on 29 April 2026 and targeted roughly 420 000 beneficiaries. On the figure SASSA gave on Monday, about one in six of that group has still not collected.

More than 1.8 million beneficiaries have moved to black cards since the wider process started in 2025.

Postbank said last week that provinces which had lagged, including the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, had lifted their conversion volumes in the final days.

How to collect the card, and what it costs

Collection is free. There is no form to complete and no need to visit a SASSA office afterwards.

Beneficiaries can find the nearest collection point by dialling 120355# from any cellphone, which returns an SMS with the site details.

Postbank chief commercial officer Thami Cele said the sites operate inside selected retailers including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar. “We only require your ID,” he said. A temporary ID is accepted.

Cards can be collected in any province, regardless of where the grant was originally approved, and work immediately on issue.

Cele urged beneficiaries not to wait for the September payment before collecting.

This deadline has been moved before

The migration has a history that explains some of the caution around it.

The card replacement programme began in September 2024. An earlier cut-off of 28 February 2025 was pushed to 20 March 2025 by the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, and the Minister of Social Development, Nokuzola Tolashe, in a joint announcement, after complaints from beneficiaries about queues and confusion.

At that time the two ministers said grant payments would continue as usual after the deadline passed. Postbank’s position now is different in one respect and the same in another. It says today’s date will not move, but it has also confirmed that replacement sites remain open afterwards for those who missed it.

Several things are not confirmed. Postbank has not published a provincial breakdown updated to deadline day, so the split above describes the position a week ago rather than this morning. It has not said how long collection sites will stay open, or set any final date by which the remaining migrations must be done. The 70 000 figure is SASSA’s count as at Monday and sits below Postbank’s own estimate of fewer than 80 000 a week earlier, and the two have not been reconciled publicly.

Beneficiaries who receive the older persons grant should note that the first payment day is Wednesday 2 September. Southafriworld’s earlier report on the gold card deadline and its coverage of the older persons grant set out the background.
