De Beers will pause production at its Venetia mine in Limpopo for two years, the diamond giant announced in a statement on Monday, 13 July marking the shutdown of South Africa’s largest diamond operation.
The company said the pause is intended to reduce costs while rephasing capital expenditure on the mine’s underground project. “Consistent with recent actions to improve business resilience, De Beers intends to pause production at the Venetia mine in South Africa for two years,” the statement read.
De Beers said the period will involve critical infrastructure investment to enhance the capacity and efficiency of the mine, with the intention of supporting future production growth once business and industry conditions improve.
The decision lands hardest on the roughly 4,000 people the mine employs. David van Wyk, a researcher at the Bench Marks Foundation, told 702 and CapeTalk that Venetia produces about 40% of South Africa’s diamonds and that the pause will have major implications for surrounding communities and the town of Musina.
De Beers CEO Al Cook said the group is making a number of changes to ensure near-term resilience. “We recognise the protracted challenging conditions as the diamond industry evolves, though we are encouraged by signs of consumer demand growth in the US and beyond, particularly in higher quality diamonds,” he said.
Why it matters
Venetia is not just another mine. It is South Africa’s flagship diamond asset, and its shutdown makes 2026 one of the darkest years on record for the country’s diamond sector.
The pause follows two other blows this year. The 158-year-old Ekapa mine in Kimberley filed for liquidation after a mudslide accident in February, and Petra Diamonds placed its Finsch mine in the Northern Cape under business rescue in June.
The timing is striking because De Beers has only recently completed the largest investment in Venetia’s history. The company committed about $2.3 billion, according to Mining Technology, to convert the mine from an open pit to an underground operation.
Open pit mining at Venetia ceased in December 2022 after three decades, according to Mining Technology, and the first underground production was delivered in mid-2023. At full ramp-up, the underground mine was expected to treat up to seven million tonnes of kimberlite ore a year and produce around four million carats annually.
Van Wyk said the pause amounts to an acknowledgement of a supply glut. “It’s kind of an admission also that there is an oversupply of rough diamonds on global markets and that they are trying to cut back that supply,” he said.
He also pointed to the pressure from synthetic stones, saying it has become difficult to distinguish lab-grown diamonds from natural ones, while consumer attitudes toward natural diamonds have shifted.

De Beers, established in 1888 and now 138 years old, employs more than 20,000 people across the diamond pipeline together with its joint venture partners, with mining operations in Botswana, Canada, Namibia and South Africa.
The company said it has been streamlining its business since 2024 under its Origins strategy, removing more than $100 million in annual overhead costs, selling or closing non-core assets and reworking capital plans on expansion projects.
The Venetia pause follows a decision earlier this year to halt the Tuzo Phase 3 expansion project at the Gahcho Kué mine in Canada. In parallel, De Beers plans to reconfigure its global operating model to prioritise core operations and cut its central corporate cost base.
On the market backdrop, De Beers said global rough diamond production is now decreasing, with several producers closing mines during 2026. It cautioned that rough diamond trading conditions are expected to remain challenging in the near term due to cyclical and industry-specific factors, even as consumer demand shows early signs of recovery.
The company noted that global consumer demand for natural diamond jewellery returned to growth in 2025, and that natural diamond sales rose among US independent jewellers in 2025 and into the first quarter of 2026, led by higher-value stones.
De Beers said it will maintain current production levels at its other operations and that previous production guidance remains unchanged.
What happens next
De Beers said it is engaging with stakeholders in accordance with relevant requirements and the company’s values as the process unfolds. It committed to supporting impacted employees and to continuing investment in its community and Social and Labour Plan commitments.
The company has not published a breakdown of how many of Venetia’s workers will be retrenched, redeployed or retained for care and maintenance during the pause. The two-year timeline also depends on a recovery in rough diamond prices, which De Beers itself describes as uncertain in the near term.
The pause comes as parent company Anglo American continues its process to sell De Beers, with Botswana, which co-owns the Debswana mines with De Beers, having explored partnerships with the UAE and Oman to acquire a stake, according to earlier reporting by Eyewitness News.
Van Wyk argued the government should begin planning for a post-mining economy in affected areas. “The government needs to look at the mining industry and say which mines are no longer viable and what should be done with those towns to create an alternative post-mining economy,” he said.
For Musina and the communities around Venetia, the next milestone will be the outcome of De Beers’ stakeholder engagement process and any formal announcements on job numbers, which the company has yet to make.
