Spanish airline Air Europa is launching a direct route between Madrid and Johannesburg, with its first flight scheduled for 24 June 2026.
Alongside the route, South African regional carrier CemAir has signed an interline agreement with Air Europa. The deal was announced on 23 June 2026, with bookings now open.
The two developments are linked but distinct. The new international flight is the Air Europa service to Madrid. The interline agreement is a commercial arrangement that lets Air Europa passengers connect onto CemAir’s existing domestic and regional network beyond Johannesburg.
CemAir itself does not fly to Spain. Its role is to carry connecting passengers from O.R. Tambo International Airport to destinations across Southern Africa under a single booking and a shared baggage process.
The Air Europa route will operate three times a week using Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Flights depart Madrid on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with services from Johannesburg on the alternate days.
The first inbound flight from Madrid lands on 24 June. The first outbound flight departs O.R. Tambo the following day, on 25 June.
Why it matters
The route is significant for Air Europa. It marks the carrier’s first scheduled service to sub-Saharan Africa, expanding a regional network that previously reached only Morocco and Tunisia on a seasonal basis.
For South African travellers, it adds a new direct link to continental Europe. Madrid serves as a hub onward to more than 50 destinations, including cities across Europe and the Americas.
The interline agreement extends that reach in both directions. Inbound visitors arriving from Madrid can book straight through to regional points served by CemAir, while South African travellers gain a connected path to Europe and beyond on one ticket.
CemAir Chief Commercial Officer Shaniel Singh said the partnership combines Air Europa’s global reach with CemAir’s Southern African network to support tourism and business travel.
Air Europa Alliances and CX Director Estelle Leray said the agreement allows the carrier’s passengers to travel beyond Johannesburg and strengthens its presence in the city.
The tie-up follows a wider CemAir strategy of partnering with international carriers. The airline has signed similar interline deals with operators including Kenya Airways, British Airways, and Air France-KLM.
Key details and figures
Air Europa operates a fleet that includes Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The carrier has described the route as opening new possibilities for travellers, citing Johannesburg’s role as a major economic centre on the continent.
According to fare details checked on Air Europa’s booking website by TopAuto, return flights are priced at around R15 000 per person, depending on the booking date and travel class.
TopAuto reported that travellers on the first outbound flight on 25 June could expect to pay slightly more than R14 000 for a return economy lite ticket. That fare type allows a single 10kg carry-on and a small underseat bag.
A standard business-class return was quoted at around R75 000 per adult, according to the same check. Fares vary with demand and booking conditions and are subject to change.
The Dreamliner aircraft on the route offers a business-class cabin with lie-flat seats. Air Europa says the aircraft type reduces fuel consumption and emissions compared with older models.
The route forms part of Air Europa’s 2026 Africa programme, which also includes seasonal services to other North African destinations.
What happens next
The inaugural flight operates on 24 June, with the schedule then settling into its three-times-weekly pattern in both directions.
Bookings under the CemAir interline agreement are open immediately. Passengers can combine Air Europa’s long-haul service with CemAir’s regional flights on a single itinerary.
The route’s longer-term shape may change. Air Europa has previously indicated plans to deploy additional widebody aircraft on key routes as new aircraft enter its fleet, which could affect capacity and cabin options on the Johannesburg service.
How the route performs will depend on demand across both inbound tourism and outbound travel from South Africa. The carrier has signalled it expects a majority of inbound traffic in the early phase.
