Amazon Prime Launches in South Africa at R59 a Month

The subscription service brings free same-day delivery, Prime Video streaming, and South Africa's first-ever Prime Day event starting 23 June.

What we know so far

Amazon has officially launched its Prime membership programme in South Africa, the company confirmed on Wednesday 3 June 2026. The subscription is priced at R59 per month or R399 per year, with a 30-day free trial available to new sign-ups at amazon.co.za/prime.

Robert Koen, managing director for Sub-Saharan Africa at Amazon, confirmed the launch, saying: “We are thrilled to offer South African customers world-class shopping and entertainment benefits in a single membership through Amazon Prime.”

Koen added that since Amazon entered South Africa two years ago, the company had built a store “our customers love,” and described the Prime launch as “the next exciting milestone on our journey in the country.”

South Africa becomes the 27th country in which Amazon Prime is available, joining markets including India, Brazil, Egypt, and Australia. Customers can pay using a South African debit or credit card through the amazon.co.za platform.

Why it matters

The launch marks a significant escalation in South Africa’s online retail market. Amazon’s entry deepens competition with rivals including Takealot, Walmart and Massmart, as well as fast-growing cross-border platforms such as Shein and Temu.

A central feature of the local strategy is the removal of delivery friction that has long affected South African e-commerce. Unlike competitors that impose minimum-spend thresholds on free delivery, Amazon is offering unlimited free same-day delivery with no minimum order requirement.

The annual pricing of R399 represents a 44% saving compared to paying monthly, and equates to roughly R33 per month. At the current exchange rate, the monthly R59 fee translates to approximately $3.60, making it among the more affordable Prime offerings globally.

Jamil Ghani, vice president of Amazon Prime, said the company had seen how Prime transformed the way members shop and engage with entertainment in every new market it entered. “We look forward to delivering disproportionate value when South African customers experience Prime’s convenience, value, and entertainment,” he said.

Key details and figures

The Prime membership bundles four core benefit categories. On delivery, members receive unlimited free same-day delivery on orders placed before midday in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria, with no minimum spend requirement, as well as unlimited free next-day delivery.

On entertainment, Prime Video gives members access to streaming of Amazon Originals and licensed international titles. Locally relevant content includes Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story, alongside internationally popular series such as Reacher, Duplicity, and The Summer I Turned Pretty.

Gaming benefits are delivered through Amazon Luna, which allows Prime members to stream selected titles via cloud. Games available at launch include Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Fortnite. Members also receive free downloadable PC games each month and one free monthly Twitch channel subscription.

On the shopping side, Prime members receive access to member-only discounts and early access to deals during major shopping events such as Black Friday, in addition to the dedicated Prime Day event.

The annual subscription of R399 compares directly to competitors in the local streaming and delivery space. Netflix’s standard plan in South Africa is priced at R199 per month, making Amazon Prime’s bundled offering significantly cheaper on a per-month basis, even before accounting for the delivery and gaming components.

The pricing reflects a deliberate strategy to capture daily consumer spending habits. By bundling logistics, video, and gaming into one low-cost subscription, Amazon is positioning Prime as a recurring fixture in household budgets rather than a premium add-on.

What happens next

South Africa’s first-ever Prime Day event is scheduled to run from 23 June through 29 June 2026, exclusive to Prime members. The event is Amazon’s flagship annual global shopping event and has historically driven record sales volumes for sellers on the platform. For South African consumers, it will be the first opportunity to access what is typically one of the deepest discount events on the Amazon calendar.

For sellers on the Amazon.co.za platform, participation in Prime Day deals requires products to carry the Prime badge, which means inventory must be fulfilled through Fulfilment by Amazon. Sellers already operating through FBA with stock at Amazon’s fulfilment centre are eligible to take part.

Early-access privileges to Black Friday deals are also included in the permanent membership benefits, positioning Prime as relevant beyond the June Prime Day window.

The competitive pressure on local rivals is immediate. Takealot, which has operated a delivery club model for several years, will face direct comparison on delivery speed, minimum spend requirements, and bundled value. The degree to which South African consumers shift spending toward Amazon.co.za as a result of the Prime launch will become clearer once Prime Day trading data is published.

Amazon has not disclosed subscriber targets for the South African market or timelines for expanding same-day delivery coverage beyond the three current metro areas of Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria. Whether and when secondary cities such as Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Bloemfontein gain access to same-day delivery remains an open question.

The 30-day free trial offers consumers a low-risk entry point ahead of the first Prime Day, after which they will need to commit to the R59 monthly or R399 annual rate to retain membership benefits.
