Uber confirms UberX South Africa shutdown for next month
The ride option most South Africans tap without thinking is being switched off. Uber has notified customers that UberX South Africa will be discontinued from 1 September 2026, ending a service that has been the platform’s everyday default since 2014.
In a notice sent to customers on Monday, Uber said it was officially saying goodbye to the product to make way for a simpler, more tailored lineup. “Whether you’re looking for an everyday budget saver or a bit of extra legroom, we’ve upgraded your options so you can ride exactly how you want to,” the company said. Uber gave drivers a clearer commercial reason. In an email to drivers, the company said many trips were being completed by the same vehicles operating on Uber Go, UberX and Comfort, which made it harder for riders to see the difference between products and harder for drivers with higher specification vehicles to benefit from that difference. What the change means for your fare and your next booking
The practical problem for riders sits in the middle of the range. UberX vehicles were Toyota Corolla class cars seating up to four passengers, positioned between the entry level and the premium tiers. businesstech
With it gone, a rider with luggage or a full car must decide between a smaller vehicle on Uber Go or a more expensive one on Uber Comfort. Neither is a direct substitute, and Uber has not published comparative fare estimates for the new lineup, so the cost effect on a typical trip cannot yet be quantified.
Drivers face a different adjustment. Uber told drivers they will still be able to operate on any product their vehicle qualifies for, and said most drivers already complete the majority of their trips on Uber Go, with additional opportunities on higher tier products where eligible. Mercury

The restructure lands while Uber is expanding elsewhere in the market. The company announced a R5 billion investment in the country’s mobility, delivery and digital economies at the South Africa Investment Conference, and says it can create as many as 300,000 new earning opportunities on its Uber Moto service over the next decade. The wider budget e-hailing market has been under strain. Driving skills experts have warned that competition between companies such as Uber and Bolt has produced a race to the bottom across service standards and safety, and the sector has come under scrutiny from authorities looking to tighten regulation as well as from competing taxi services. businesstech
What riders and drivers still do not know
Several things remain unconfirmed. Uber has not published pricing for Uber Go and Uber Comfort against the outgoing UberX rates, has not said whether Uber Go vehicles will meet demand from riders travelling in groups or with luggage, and its customer notice makes no reference to courier services or the Moto platform.
Reports of the earlier Johannesburg notification differ on timing, with one account placing it in May 2026 and another publishing the driver email in March 2026, and Uber has not issued a public statement reconciling the sequence.
The next fixed markers are the last day of UberX service on 31 August, the switch to the four tier lineup on 1 September, and Uber’s next in-app fare updates, which will be the first opportunity for riders to compare what a former UberX trip now costs on Uber Go and Uber Comfort.
