Revolut eyes 2028 SA launch as waitlist nears 100,000

The London fintech says local sign-ups are approaching 100,000 while it waits on a South African banking licence, but it is not yet authorised to operate as a bank.

What we know so far

British fintech Revolut is targeting a South African launch by 2028 and says its local waitlist is approaching 100,000 sign-ups.

Jacques Meyer, who leads Revolut’s South African operations, disclosed the waitlist figure in comments reported by Bloomberg on 22 June 2026. He said the company is already seeing exceptional demand for its product.

Revolut is not yet a licensed bank in South Africa. The company submitted a licence application to the South African Reserve Bank in September 2025 and says it will launch its products only after securing regulatory approval.

A company spokesperson said Revolut plans to introduce what it calls its signature ecosystem in South Africa, with offerings tailored to the local market. These would include a zero-fee account.

The 2028 target marks the first time Revolut has put a public timeframe on a full South African launch. The licence application has been with the regulator since late 2025.

Revolut frames South Africa as a strategic entry point into the wider continent. It has said it intends to expand further across Africa after establishing itself locally.

Why it matters

South Africa has one of the world’s most profitable and concentrated banking sectors, long dominated by a small group of established lenders. Revolut’s entry would add a heavily capitalised global player to an already intensifying contest for digital customers.

The company would not be arriving into an open field. A wave of challengers is already competing for the same customers, many offering no-fee accounts.

Those challengers include GoTyme Bank, backed by businessman Patrice Motsepe, along with Discovery Bank and Old Mutual’s banking unit. Retailers Pepkor and Shoprite have signalled plans to use loyalty-programme data to move into financial services.

Established banks are responding by leaning into higher-value services for wealthier clients, rather than competing purely on price.

For consumers, more competition among digital banks generally points to lower fees and faster product innovation. Revolut’s stated zero-fee account would slot directly into that trend.

Meyer signalled the company is not chasing sign-up numbers for their own sake. He said the focus is on delivering a disruptive experience that changes how people manage money.

The caveat is timing and approval. Until the Reserve Bank grants a licence, none of Revolut’s banking products can go live in South Africa, and the company itself has tied any launch to that approval.

Key details and figures

Revolut has about 75 million users worldwide. It was co-founded by chief executive Nikolay Storonsky and has grown by offering mainstream banking, low-cost cross-border payments, and tools spanning wealth management and crypto.

The South African application was filed with the Reserve Bank’s Prudential Authority. Revolut has described the move as its first banking licence application in Africa.

To strengthen its local position, the company appointed Dr Gaby Magomola as chairman of Revolut South Africa in late 2025. Magomola previously held senior roles at Citibank, Barclays, First National Bank, and African Bank.

Once licensed, Revolut has said it plans to offer domestic and international transfers, debit and credit cards, savings accounts, loans, and access to stock and crypto trading.

The South African push runs alongside a broader global expansion. Revolut is also launching in the United Arab Emirates and eyeing the wider Middle East and North Africa.

In recent weeks the company received approval in the United Kingdom to offer full banking services and applied for a banking charter in the United States. Its stated global ambition is to operate in 30 additional countries by 2030.

What happens next

The decisive step is regulatory. Revolut’s South African launch depends on the outcome of its Reserve Bank licence application, which remains under review.

The company has set 2028 as its target launch year, leaving a multi-year runway between the current application and any live product.

Until then, the waitlist remains an expression of interest rather than an active customer base. Revolut has not published a phased rollout plan or confirmed which products would go live first.

How the Reserve Bank weighs the application, and how entrenched lenders and existing challengers respond, will shape whether Revolut meets its 2028 goal. The regulator has not publicly commented on the application timeline.
