Gauteng police have arrested Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of late Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, following a shooting at a property in Hyde Park, Johannesburg. Police say an employee at the residence was shot during an altercation on Thursday, 19 February 2026, and remains in critical condition in hospital.

Police also arrested a second man in connection with the incident. Authorities have opened an attempted murder case and say the firearm believed to have been used has not yet been found, with specialist units searching the premises as part of the ongoing investigation.

What police say happened in Hyde Park

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, officers were alerted to a shooting at a high walled Hyde Park property by private security. Police had to knock to gain entry before beginning their on scene investigation.

Nevhuhulwi said a gardener employed at the residence was shot and rushed to hospital in a critical condition. Separate radio news coverage reported the victim as a 23-year-old employee and said the shooting followed a confrontation at the property.

Police have not publicly confirmed who fired the shot. In comments carried by international wire reporting, police indicated the suspects were uncooperative when officers arrived and did not disclose where the firearm was, leaving investigators still working to establish the precise sequence of events.

Two suspects detained and arrested

Gauteng police confirmed that two men were taken into custody for questioning and later arrested. eNCA reported that the suspects are aged 33 and 28 and that one of them is the former Zimbabwean president’s son.

Associated Press reporting identified the arrested Mugabe family member as Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and said a family lawyer confirmed he would be represented by South African legal counsel.

Police have indicated the investigation is continuing and that the motive for the shooting was not yet clear based on the information available at the scene.

Search continues for the firearm

One of the key outstanding issues is the firearm allegedly used in the shooting.

eNCA reported that police dog units were deployed to search the house after cartridges were found, but the firearm itself had not been recovered at the time of the report.

Radio news coverage also quoted the police spokesperson confirming that investigators were searching for the firearm, with K9 teams, detectives and forensic crime scene management processing the scene.

In South African investigations involving serious violent crime allegations, the recovery of the firearm can be central to forensic testing, including determining whether it matches recovered cartridges and whether it can be linked to a suspect through handling and ballistic evidence. Police have not yet provided public detail on the calibre, number of shots fired, or whether any firearm was licensed.

Legal context and what happens next

Attempted murder is a serious criminal charge in South Africa and is typically investigated as a priority, particularly when a victim is critically injured. While police have confirmed arrests and an investigation, a case of this kind usually proceeds through further steps that can include:

  • formal charging and first court appearance
  • a bail process (depending on the charge profile and the State’s position)
  • further investigation, including statements, forensic work and reconstruction of events
  • possible prosecution decisions by the National Prosecuting Authority if evidence supports a trial

Police have not publicly confirmed a court date in the statements available at the time of reporting, and it remains possible that additional charges could be added or that allegations could change as evidence is tested.

It is important to note that an arrest is not a finding of guilt. The suspects are entitled to the presumption of innocence and to contest the allegations in court.

Who is Chatunga Mugabe

Chatunga Mugabe is widely known in the region as the youngest son of the late Robert Mugabe and former Zimbabwean first lady Grace Mugabe. Robert Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe for decades before being removed from power in 2017 and later died in 2019.

The Mugabe family has had previous legal controversies reported in the media, including a high profile incident in Johannesburg in 2017 involving Grace Mugabe, which drew attention to the family’s presence and interests in South Africa.

In this case, South African authorities have focused on the immediate facts: an employee was shot at a residence linked to Mugabe’s son, two men were arrested, and investigators are still searching for the firearm and working to confirm what happened during the altercation described by police.

Why this case is drawing attention in South Africa

The case has gained significant public attention for several reasons.

First, the incident took place in Hyde Park, a well known upmarket Johannesburg suburb where serious violent crime incidents are relatively rare compared with many other areas of the city. Second, the case involves a prominent political family from a neighbouring country, which increases scrutiny and cross border media coverage. Third, police have publicly highlighted the unresolved question of the missing firearm, which raises further investigative urgency and public interest.

For South Africans, the case also lands amid ongoing public debate around violent crime, private security, and policing capacity. In this incident, police confirmed that private security raised the alarm and that multiple police units were brought in to secure and process the scene.
